7 Actions to Help you Reach Your Goal
Starting a new project is exciting! Working toward an end goal gives us renewed energy and motivation. However, despite our best intentions, the projects often get pushed to the back burner and are not fully completed. Whether it be life circumstances, depleted energy, or lack of an action plan, we fail to finish what we started. But it doesn't have to be this way! With a little grit and determination while implementing these actionable steps we can achieve just about anything!
1. Set up your to-do list the night before
Waiting until morning to plan out your list of tasks to accomplish will only slow you down for the day. You wake up, pour your coffee, and sit there thinking about what you need to get done. Meanwhile, the day is already moving forward and the clock is ticking. By setting up your to-do list the night before you can review your day and carry over any unfinished tasks before adding more. Then, in the morning when your alarm goes off, you already have your game plan for the day and dive in straight away.
2. Set one big goal and several small stepping goals
What is your biggest goal with this project? Write it down. Now what are the small steps you need to take to get to that goal? I call these the stepping goals. The stepping goals are what will lead you to success with your big goal.
The key here is to make your big goal BIG. Don't limit yourself! The bigger you dream the more you can achieve. Then make your stepping goals small and manageable (i.e. these are tasks you can accomplish day to day). By accomplishing the stepping goals on a daily basis you'll make steady progress toward the big goal without wearing yourself out.
3. Turn off distractions
I like to have the tv on in the background for some added noise in the house. With just me, my dog, and the baby most of the time, the days seem pretty quiet. But the television distracts me when I'm doing things other than housework. So I turn it off more and more these days. I get more accomplished when my brain isn't bouncing back and forth between listening to noise and focusing on the task at hand.
Whatever distractions you have, turn them off until you get the job done.
4. Time block your day
Time blocking is a great way to accomplish a lot in a short amount of time. For example, I designate 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. for tidying up the house, working out, and meal prepping for supper. I get as much of this done in that two hour time block and when the time runs out I move on to whatever is in my next time block. If it helps, set an alarm so you aren't distracting by watching the clock and can put your head down and pound out your goals.
5. Stay up until the job is done
Don't go to bed until you've finished everything on your list. Even if this means going to bed later, get it done. The small stepping goals are essential in order to make it to your big goal so don't put them off for another day. If you find that you're constantly going to bed late in order to finish your tasks, reevaluate how much you're asking of yourself during the day or if distractions are getting in the way. Life will throw interruptions at you. The key is to remember why you started and where you want to go.
6. Ask for help
We can't do it all ourselves. None of us can. So there is absolutely no shame in asking for help. Ask your spouse or a friend to help out so you can focus your energy on this project. This could be them running an errand for you or helping with the kids or housework for a couple hours. I know asking for help often grates against our skin. We want to be able to do it all. But swallow your pride and lean on your friends and family. But remember - always return the favors! If you ask for help, be sure to reciprocate that help for them down the line.
7. Visualize the end result
Making your goal big is for this step. Visualize what your life will be like once you've reached this goal. The bigger the goal the more enticing the end result will be. The big goal should also be exciting. When the big goal is exciting you can dream of the end result while grinding through the smaller and less exciting stepping goals. Let the excitement to reach your big goal drive you to finish your tasks for the day and to finish the project ahead of you with passion and enthusiasm.
